Several dates — Teatro Cervantes, Málaga
Rachmaninov and Strauss, performed by the Málaga Philharmonic Orchestra (OFM) at Teatro Cervantes in Málaga, on 10 and 11 June 2027 at 8pm, part of its 2026–27 subscription season. Conducted by José María Moreno, with pianist Alexei Volodin as soloist.
The first half is given over to Sergei Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor, Op. 30, the celebrated “Rach 3”. The composer himself premiered it in New York in 1909, and it remains one of the most demanding works in the piano repertoire: extreme virtuosity, a highly complex structure and melodies of overwhelming romanticism. For years it lived in the shadow of the more accessible Second Concerto, but today it's seen as one of the great challenges and triumphs of the repertoire.
The second half brings Also sprach Zarathustra (1896), Richard Strauss's tone poem inspired by Nietzsche's book. Its famous opening sunrise, made widely known through its use in the film 2001: A Space Odyssey, is one of the most striking openings in orchestral music. Strauss wasn't trying to illustrate the philosophy itself, but to evoke the emotions the text suggested to him.
Runs approximately 2 hours with an interval. Tickets from €10.24 (up to €44.03) at the Teatro Cervantes box office and through Unientradas.
From Thursday 10 June 2027 to Friday 11 June 2027.
