Pärt, Britten and Elgar, performed by the Málaga Philharmonic Orchestra (OFM) at Teatro Cervantes in Málaga, on 10 and 11 December 2026 at 8pm, part of its 2026–27 subscription season. Conducted by José Luis Gómez, with young British violinist Leia Zhu as soloist.

The concert opens with Arvo Pärt's Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten (1977): an elegy for strings and bell written after the English composer's death, built on a descending scale repeated at different speeds until it creates a hypnotic, deeply moving atmosphere.

From the tribute, the programme moves to the composer being honoured, with Benjamin Britten's Violin Concerto, Op. 15. Composed in 1939, it carries the unease of the Spanish Civil War and the lead-up to the Second World War, and has a strong link to Spain: it was premiered in New York in 1940 by the Spanish violinist Antonio Brosa. It's a work of enormous technical demands and sombre lyricism.

The programme closes with one of the great classics of British music, Edward Elgar's “Enigma” Variations, Op. 36 (1899). Each variation is a musical portrait of a friend of the composer, and among them shines “Nimrod”, one of the most moving orchestral pages in the repertoire.

Tickets from €10 (up to €43) at the Teatro Cervantes box office and through Unientradas.

From Thursday 10 December 2026 to Friday 11 December 2026.
